About the event
YE Xingqian, born in China in 1963, was an extremely precocious artist, having begun painting at the age of five. He learned wood carving with his brother and, like many of his fellow students, copied the works of the old masters. His arrival in France in 1983 gave him a real aesthetic shock, and he quickly immersed himself in Western art, meeting young artists with whom he exhibited. Persevering and hard-working, he paints tirelessly in his studio in Montreuil. His work, which is often described as lyrical abstraction, explores a range of techniques and media: ink on Chinese paper, ink on canvas, a mixture of Chinese ink, acrylic and oil with the addition of plaster on raw canvas. His work retains the heritage of Chinese painting, with Chinese ink still omnipresent, while entering the 21st century with full force. He has exhibited in France and China for many years. In 2018, five watercolours on Chinese paper entered the permanent collection of the Musée Guimet. In 2021, a large ink on canvas joined the Musée Cernuschi collection.
