"I approached all countries through dreams". In his collections, Yves Saint Laurent delivers a vision of the Orient that is both literal and imaginary. This Asia dreamed by the couturier is tinged with his literary knowledge and fed by his personal collection of art objects and by the cinema. Imbued with these different influences, Yves Saint Laurent created haute couture models by appropriating Asian dress codes. He thus reinterpreted the sumptuous dresses of the emperors and officials of imperial China, the richly ornamented wardrobe of the princes and maharajas of India or the kimonos inspired by the kabuki theatre and the courtesans of Kyoto. In addition, the new fragrance, Opium, was a worldwide "scandalous" success.
